Arthur Mooney & Sons Farm
Family Owned Farm in St. Catherines, PEI.
The Mooney family started working the land that the farm is currently sitting on in the early 1900s. The farm was passed down multiple generations - evolving throughout that time, each generation leaving it's own mark.
The last thirty years have seen a shift from a family-focused mixed cattle/crop farm to a three-year rotation involving potatoes and other crops, changing depending on market and soil health. A packing shed established in the 1990s continues to expand. The map images show the progression of the farm between 1928, 1935, 1968, and 2000.

The original farm, which originated when the family lived in "the Glen" close to Fountain Head was owned by Daniel Mooney and his wife Bridget O'Neill who settled in 1842. In that time, the Glen was the beginning of a vibrant community, and Daniel assisted in choosing the name "Greenvale Road" (likely based off of moving to PEI from Antrim County Ireland, which had a Greenvale) . As time passed people moved "closer to civilization", bringing the first Mooney to St. Catherines - Andrew (Andy) Robert Mooney (the second).
Andy and his wife Emily built the original farmhouse seen in the images on the right and handed the land and homestead area to Art where he built the homestead pictured above - Art and Kay's family home (the building process shown in the picture below). The farm, at that time included cattle with milking barns and some storage. Over time, the original farmhouse became the farm's first workshop.
During the 1990s, the family moved out of cattle to focus solely on Potatoes as the main crop. During this time they worked towards the completion of the packing shed and increased acreage, storage, and equipment.
Art and Kay moved out of the homestead in the mid 2000s, and prior to his passing, Art would be seen doing periodic "drives" to the farm from the Colville Manor on his electric wheelchair. Art passed away in 2014 at the age of 88 (leaving behind 10 kids, 26 grandchildren, and 10 great- grandchildren) and Kay passed away in 2021 at the age of 94, at that time the great-grandchildren increased to 20. In February of 2017, Art & Kay's beloved farm house was lost to a fire, leaving an empty spot at the farm where many memories were made - which still sits empty today.

In the Fields.
Arthur Mooney and Sons Farm has always made an effort to collaborate with on-farm research as well as experiment with new technologies. A great example is leveraging a field on the line road to conduct long-term nitrogen monitoring trials with Dr. Yefang Jiang / AAFC, which also incorporated a Willow Buffer Zone trial (elements of this study can be found here: https://cdnsciencepub.com/doi/full/10.1139/cjps-2022-0154). They are also conducting a long-term cover cropping trial in partnership with the PEIAA in the same area to best understand the long-term benefits of applying different cover crops. These trials are accompanied by frequent on-farm trials of biostimulants and fertilizer types partnering with private sector.
Incorporating technology has ranged from early adopting GPS technology, to Artificial Intelligence size profiling on the harvester. This has also led to variable rate fertilizer applications and continuous soil monitoring. The farm supported Chad and his ambitions to pursue drone technology in 2024, based on their curiosity for the platform to enhance crop protection, and possibly replace wheeled spraying in the future!
